Last week Kymeta’s 20 cm antenna passed a significant pointing and tracking test, bringing a hybrid solution of satellite and cellular for connected cars that much closer to reality.
Last year, Kymeta tested the 20 cm prototype and successfully closed a connection with an Intelsat EpicNG satellite at the Intelsat headquarters in Washington DC. Users were able to browse the internet, stream YouTube videos, and perform audio Skype calls through the 20 cm system, showcasing the benefits of high throughput satellite connectivity for connected cars.
That was a major milestone.
“This milestone is even more significant,” said Tom Freeman, Kymeta Senior Vice President, Land Mobile, “it proves that the same level of functionality and access can be achieved while on the move, at freeway speeds. This changes everything.” With a hybrid approach to connecting cars, through the use of both cellular and satellite networks, drivers and passengers can now have a truly seamless communications experience regardless of location.
Satellite solutions will be an integral part of the 5G infrastructure for connected and autonomous vehicles. The 20 cm system will enable receive-heavy applications for automotive including software and firmware over the air updates, telematics, improved mapping, infotainment, autonomous driving data, emergency calling, and more. Kymeta also eliminates the need for a gimbaled dish, providing global, mobile broadband to vehicles in areas that are unreached or underserved by terrestrial networks.
Hot on the heels of the wide commercial acceptance of the 70 cm Kymeta KyWay Terminal by the market place, the 20 cm fit right into initiatives such as the Toyota-led Automotive Edge Computing Consortium widely promoted in Barcelona and for constant contact with the car whether from space or terrestrial. The 20 cm is scheduled for extensive field trials this summer.
